Business Intelligence Project Planning

The Business Intelligence Pocket Guide by CMBI's Colin McGowan makes some high level recommendations about the breakdown of effort you might expect on a typical BI project.

Each phase of a BI project should be short and include end user deliverables. A maximum of 4 weeks is a good starting point (see Introduction to BI Project Management). At the end of the phase there should be review period with lessons learned rolled into the next phase. Agile methodology has many useful practices that you can employ.
